This months dour defender Geordie McMillan has been awarded the much coverted Redder of the Month Award. A mild mannered Environmental Engineer by day Geordie has been pivotal in helping the Club gather some real off field momentom heading into the Queens Birthday break.
When not studying rocks, Geordie can be found at home reading comic books in the company of his fiance Jess and his 18 month old Schnauzer puppy Alfalfa. The Fitzroy Reds Website took some time out this week to see what makes Geordie McMillan tick.
Fitzroy Reds: Geordie, a Redder of the Month, so early in the season. Sets up the year for you nicely?
Geordie McMillan: It's a huge honour. To be recognised by the peers is fantastic. The lucrative media offers from your Today Tonight’s, your Women’s Day’s, your Oprah’s …. is an added bonus.
Fitzroy Reds : Tell us about your opponent in the first practice match at Ramsden street.
Geordie McMillan: I was playing full back and they had a stay at home full forward. His name was Devon, he stayed at home (didn’t venture out of the goal square) and there was a lot of him….1.8m tall and carrying some condition . I ran off him in the first half and broke his spirit. He didn’t return after half time.
Fitzroy Reds: We have noticed that your kicking both feet has improved since last year anything you can put that down to?
Geordie McMillan: I try and get down to training a bit early with John Clarke. I try and get 100 in on each foot while he talks about himself. Its been good for my footy.
Fitzroy Reds: Like a few blokes you have played your footy under a few different coaches, the question on everyones lips: whats it like playing under Granty?
Geordie McMillan: With the reponsibility of coaching this year Granty has taken his footy and comedy to a new level. All i can say is that he is lucky the Clubbies season is a bit shorter then the rest of the teams cause he would surely have to run out of material otherwise.
Fitzroy Reds: Off the field how have you seen the move to the Rose Hotel as our primary club sponsor?
Geordie McMillan: While dissapointed to see the Lord Newry Hotel slip into hibernation for a while i am really happy to pick up the Rose as a sponsor of the club. Its a friendly atmosphere with great staff who bring cutlery to your table when you get your meal delivered, something i really value in a pub eating environment.
Fitzroy Reds: While were on it, are you happy to nominate a favoured meal from the Rose:
Geordie McMillan: I did really like the Calamari Rings down there but I am a bit of an environmentalist and after hearing that world squid numbers were in decline i have tried to stay away from them. As a result i have been giving the mixed grill a bit of a run lately.
Fitzroy Reds: How are you seeing the impact of the new coaching staff and players?
Geordie McMillan: Its been great to get a new group of people around the club. Everyone is really committed to their footy but are also eager to make an effort off the field. Apart from getting Wal to smile a bit more I dont think we could complain at all.
Fitzroy Reds: Great, thanks Geordie and good luck for the rest of the year.
Geordie McMillan: Cheers.
